Novel ‘Stubby/Tube’ Antenna Technology Receives Patent Notice of Allowance

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 2002--Fractal Antenna Systems, Inc, today announced that it has received a notice of allowance (NOA) from the U.S. Patent office for a patent application including its conformal antenna technology.  In part trademarked as ComCyl® antennas, they are a novel approach to providing a higher performance, multiband and/or broadband antenna in cylindrical form factors. Such form factors are common as ‘stubby’ antennas on handheld wireless devices, and in vehicular and base station applications.

The new patent will be the company’s fifth. The firm has a large number of pending patents that are anticipated to issue in the near term. The patent and pending patent portfolio captures the firm’s proprietary fractal antenna, array, and electronics innovations.

Fractals are intricate designs that repeat on a number of size scales. Fractal Antenna Systems, Inc.uses fractal geometry to make antennas that contain no parts, are smaller, broad/multiband, higher gain, more closely pack, and/or are frequency independent. The firm's Chief Technical Officer, Nathan Cohen, founded the field of antenna elements based on fractals in 1988. This field now comprises a discipline of well over 400 researchers worldwide in over 20 different countries

Fractal Antenna Systems, Inc.’s CEO, David Moschella characterized the new patent NOA as ”a strong indication of the breadth of our experience and expanse of our technologies, while defining the ownership of a large class of antennas with existing and future application.”

Nathan Cohen, inventor of the ComCyl® antenna technology, notes: “Although the public record reveals other patent applications for what we believe is described by our  Comcyl® antenna technology, upon issuance, that technology will be patent protected by Fractal.”

Moschella adds: ”Our firm will consider non-exclusive licensing as a remedy to those companies that have unauthorized extant and growing product bases that use Comcyl® antenna technology. After 90 days from issuance, we will consider exclusive licensing to competitors of firms that have not pursued this remedy. As usual, we will act in the best interests of our customers with respect to our intellectual property.”
